Generally, step bits are optimized for materials no thicker than the height of a single step (typically 1/8" to 1/4"). Using step up drill bits on thick plate metal can cause high friction and chip packing, leading to tool overheating. For thick materials, standard twist or core drills are recommended.
Standard twist drills tend to grab thin sheet metal as they exit, creating distorted, triangular holes or lifting the workpiece. The incremental step drill bit shape cuts the hole in small, controlled steps, keeping the sheet flat and producing a perfectly round bore.
